About

Fiona's work is primarily concerned with the innovative use of colour and form and how they work together on various fabrics. Her distinctive abstract collages have been created in an organic intuitive way, selecting from hundreds of painted pieces of velvet and silks collected over many years. She has a keen eye for layering and with these, the nuances of shades can ultimately evoke a feeling or a nostalgia. Inspired by the abstract expressionist artists such as Rothko, Sonia Delaunay and Klee's use of colour theory, she created these new collages.

The painted velvets and silk organza’s in her collages are sometimes pressed for reflectiveness, layered or have frayed edges to break down the inherent preciousness of these fabrics and to let the colours and shapes dance and play off each other. Over the years Fiona has fully pushed the possibilities of how velvet can be treated and recently, how it can be incorporated into an artwork and turned into a striking finished piece.

After gaining a degree in Fashion design, Fiona spent 35 years working in the fashion industry and costume designing for T.V. commercials in Los Angeles and London. Whilst researching for 1930’s period costumes in Palace Costume, Los Angeles, she was inspired to paint with beautiful colours on silk & velvet, which were then made into scarves, cushions and accessories.

Clients who have commissioned her to make luxury hand-painted, printed and chiffon layered silk scarves include Christian Lacroix, along with retail outlets such as Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman in USA, Barneys Japan and Ally Capellino, Space NK and Whistles in London. A Recent collaboration with New York Designer Prabal Gurung resulted in hand-painted velvet cushions sold on Etsy as part of a carefully curated collection, as well as natural dyeing of hemp for Margent Farm and Ally Capellino.
